Study Abroad Grants Available to Students
Study abroad gives students the opportunity to travel to amazing places, meet new people, and perhaps even pick up a new language. Besides the travel, you will experience new customs, holidays, foods, art, and music firsthand! Even if you thought you could never afford to study abroad, there are now grants available.
AIU Study Abroad Programs, in coordination with ASID, has established the Global Edge Grant in the amount of up to $750 for students currently enrolled in a college or university who are members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and interested in pursuing an overseas learning opportunity. ASID allied and professional members do not qualify for the grant.
Contact the AIU Study Abroad Programs for eligibility requirements and application information: 1-800-255-6839.
AutoCAD 2008
OU Information Technology brings the very best software to College of Architecture students and faculty. Early fall semester of last year, IT updated important software such as AutoCAD/ADT 2007, Autodesk VIZ 2007, and 3D Studio MAX 8.
AutoCAD and Architectural Desktop 2007 have many new features, which were updated from the older version. Features like rendering visualization, walk-through animations, section and flattening tools, and documentation tools help CAD users to accomplish much more in a shorter period of time. AutoDesk has been developing a new version with easier to use features, including the ability to dimension in model space, customize 2D command dashboard interface, use Excel in AutoCAD and better Word improvement, and faster rendering.
Dimensioning in Model Space. In AutoCAD 2007, the user has to dimension in paper space to get the correct dimension. In the 2008 version, a scale factor entered on paper space will be recognized in model space as well. Dimensions and other annotations will appear at the proper height.
Command Customization. The dashboard interface contains more 2D commands and can now be customized. The layer manager can now be customized by removing or moving columns. New columns have been added to the Layer Manager that allow control of layer color by viewport.
Microsoft Excel in AutoCAD. “Future” AutoCAD will allow you to bring Excel spreadsheet data in as an AutoCAD object that is linked and plotting problems with OLE objects will be eliminated. Associate activity with Excel will be retained, so if data is changed in Excel, the AutoCAD object will be updated.
Improved use of Word. Bringing in Word data will retain paragraph spacing and MTEXT can be re-sized to fit in columns.
Leader Lines. Look for multi-segment leaders. Also, you will be able to pick multiple leaders and have AutoCAD automatically line them up so they are all left justified.
AutoCAD 2008 will be available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista. However, it is built o benefit more important features of Vista. Vista users will be able to take advantage of VS.NET and complete integration with Microsoft Office (Office 2007) and embraces the new Direct3D *koff* standard.
The 2008 version will be on the market by the end of march and could possibly be available for OU CoA students by next semester.
Greenbuild in Denver, Colorado
Last November around 50 stunts from OU's College of Architecture attended Greenbuild 2006 in Denver, Colorado. A week of LEED workshops, Green building tours, keynote speakers, as well as an exhibition of over 700 vendors provided an unparalleled opportunity to connect with peers, industry experts, and influential leaders as they shared insights on the green building movement and its diverse specialties.
Although the trip was educational, there was a little time to get away. Some students chose a day trip to Loveland to go skiing, and others explored Downtown Denver. Also scheduled was an architect guided tour of the new Denver Art Museum's Hamilton Building designed by Daniel Libeskind.

A Spin on Kitchen Design. If you live in a small space, why give up so much to the kitchen? Designer Alred Averbeck spun out an idea for a kitchen that has the equivalent of twelve cupboards in a rotating kitchen, complete with doors that close to cover all of your unwashed dishes. There are watertight rotating connections in the hub so that you can rotate the kitchen even when the dishwasher is running. Prices start as $6,500.
